about

By Nigel Meyer:

Christlike is the solo output of Salt Lake City’s ever-busy experimental rocker, Spencer Gundersen. His latest spirit-rock album, Reflections, combines familiar and further-out inspirations into his signature sound like shifting mirage. The record is introspective and out-of-body alike. It is a desert landscape of an album, wide and expansive, still and monolithic yet ever evolving through time. Riffs and melodies grow from one another, folding on top of, and living within, one another.

Reflections is a return to the live format following a string of loop-heavy records that focused on electronic instrumentation and studio manipulation. 2021’s double release of the full-length Sages and the single At Play, along with 2022’s phenomenal In Spirit, took Christlike to career heights; and now Gundersen, as the title implies, seems to be looking back down below to reflect on the journey. It is a welcomed venture into the roots of an artist.

Side one begins in a slow and delicate acoustic guitar jam and gradually falls into itself, only to lift into a mountainous doom-jam. Gundersen filters feedback and free expression through americana and kraut rock, stacking layer after layer, to make songs like cairns that give us clues and nods to genre bending forerunners. The motorik beats feel right at home with upright honky tonk pianos and delayed slide guitars.

The second side inches closer to Christlike’s love for explosive guitar rock as the first track lays screeching guitars and crashing cymbals over a hauntingly persistent piano motif. This duality continues throughout the piano-centric side, drifting up and down. We get a sample from Jonas Mekas discussing the reflective nature of chopping and screwing our memories into art to reflect on ourselves, building order out of the chaos of our lives. This is followed by another acoustic jam of 12 string and slide guitars before a climactic explosion of noise.

Gundersen’s trajectory has been one of constant exploration and unpredictability. Reflections peers back through Christlike’s past to make a new-age rock record that encourages your own self-reflection.
